These are demos recorded in August 1964 by a group that was still in its infancy. So yeah, the album isn't a classic. But in terms of incorporating the British Invasion sound, it was well ahead of just about anything else being done in the US at the time. If this were by some no-name band who disappeared forever after recording it, it would be a cult favorite among the cognoscenti.

"Mr. Tambourine Man" is the only non-original song; this version is strictly of historical interest. The rest are very much in the mold of the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Chad & Jeremy, and the Zombies, and show Gene Clark in the process of developing his songwriting skills... they're pleasant, charming, and mostly not particularly memorable, although some do contain traces of the haunting and wistful quality that mark his best work. Except for "The Reason Why", most of the songs don't display much of the signature Byrds sound -- in fact, for some reason, they tend to remind me more of the Buffalo Springfield's "Sit Down, I Think I Love You". My favorite songs are "The Reason Why", the uptempo "You Movin'", and the samba-influenced "Airport Song" (the only one co-written by Crosby, and featuring a very nice lead vocal by him).

Four of these songs, in different versions, made it onto their first Columbia LP. Also, "You Showed Me" is well-known for the Turtles' cover version; the version here pales by comparison.
